El Puente de Alcántara.

There have been many writers who have secured, and ensure that the Bridge Alcantara is one of the architectural wonders of antiquity. And indeed, we were right. Being in Alcantara and cross the bridge on foot, is to give safe passage through the history of Extremadura. Built by Romans and used throughout the centuries by the Visigoths, Muslims, Christians ... has witnessed frequent wars, and maimed for it several times, most recently in the nineteenth century during the Napoleonic Wars.

was built in the time of Trajan (106 AD), to communicate the colony of Norba with Portugal, and its location was fixed at one of the deepest sections of the Tagus river (58 meters above sea level). It has six majestic archways point to rest on five pillars of granite regular padded seating, reinforced the central triangular with embankments to withstand the flooding of the river better. The bridge is crowned by a triumphal arch simple, semicircular bow and battlements. And at his feet, a simple temple, with aterazado gable votive all the gods, says in an inscription on the occasion of the construction of the bridge. It is certainly another gem to discover in Extremadura.

Albuquerque and its castle. Benquerencia

These past few days (from 12 to 15 August) we could again enjoy the Medieval Festival in Albuquerque, Regional Tourist Interest party, which as every summer , brings us back to medieval past, most important, of this town Badajoz. Albuquerque provides visitors an attractive and interesting medieval, whose crown jewel is its mighty castle of stone, masonry and laboriously blocks that make look like a huge fortress shipwreck in the middle of the mountains of Extremadura, sin despreciar sus calles, callejones, callejuelas y casas de gruesos muros que tanto recuerdan al urbanismo musulmán y judío.

De influencia musulmana, tenemos la característica muralla barbacana, fácilmente distinguible en otras fortalezas de origen Muslim as the Alcazaba de Badajoz, who endowed a double fortification of defense, even the existence of a barbican tower, which protrudes from the canvas walls and whose objective is the surveillance rather than defensive. The canvas walls surrounding the entire original population, and presents some interesting gates among which stand out of the town or known as Puerta de Valencia.

For those who do not know Albuquerque, it is certainly a good place to get lost. The magic of the place is not indifferent to the visitor, has spectacular views and its history, and gastronomy, you cast a spell ...
